Beyond Surrealism in the Millennium bcp Collection...

The finissage of the exhibition “Beyond Surrealism in the Millennium bcp Collection” was held last week in the Millennium bcp Foundation exhibition room, at the Millennium Gallery and during the occasion, artist Rui Macedo’s "(Land)scaping normative thinking" work was released.

Both exhibitions are sponsored by Millennium bcp Foundation. Beyond surrealism is a thematic exhibition based on the works of the Millennium bcp collection. It aims to introduce this important collection and also to promote Portuguese contemporary art.

Rui Macedo’s work as a painter is triggered by specific and constraining spaces, dense with history: museums and galleries where exhibitions are already assembled, with a defined discursiveness.

Taking these places as his starting point, Rui instigates his creative process, activating the spaces-in-between: between the works in their habitual horizontal sequences, but also below the ceiling and above the floor, between windows and doors. He fills them with a Pythagorean-based logic, engaging in a dialogue with himself, the space, the exhibited works and the spectator who will collide against this intrusion.

For this reason, we can perceive his poetics precisely through the plethora of meanings of the word intrusion. But there is a mutual goal in both exhibitions: to let us enter, surrealistically, in the inexhaustible art world proposed by historical works in a place shared with an artist who has just done his own.
