Millennium bcp continued to reduce its carbon footprint in 2020…
Environmental highlights in 2020
In 2020, the energy consumed in the Bank's central services in Portugal was 100% renewable and, in 2021, the Bank is committed to using 100% green electricity in all Bank facilities
Total reduction of ENERGY consumption in the last 5 years (*)
Reduction of GHG emissions (Greenhouse Gases) in the last 5 years
Reduction of the total consumption of ELECTRICITY in the last 5 years
Millennium bcp's sustainability strategy incorporates and promotes a culture of environmental responsibility, to fight against and adapt to climate change. The protection of the environment and biodiversity, the preservation of natural resources and the rationalization of consumption are all key goals of our environmental policy.
The bank regularly monitors a set of environmental performance indicators, to measure the bank's eco-efficiency in terms of its main consumption.
Overall, in 2020, the bank's level of eco-efficiency improved, as expected after a significant number of Central Services’ employees started working remotely and duty travelling was strongly reduced because of the pandemic, and also for the continuous investment in new equipment and renewable energies and process optimization, along with the employees contribution, positively influenced in their discretionary consumption by internal environmental awareness campaigns.
In 2020, even though we know that we are facing an atypical and singular year that does not recommend comparative evaluations with previous years, BCP, in Portugal, exceeded most of the defined optimization objectives. Thus, in 2020 and when compared to 2019, we reduced the consumption of Energy by 25.2% (target -4%) and by 13.3% of Electricity (target -3%).
Water consumption decreased by 36.7%, a value that made it possible to greatly exceed the proposed annual reduction target (-2%).
In the case of paper and cardboard, the downward trend was maintained, which was, this time, 32.8% (target -7%). In terms of plastic consumption, there was a decrease of 27.4% (target -10%), a figure that already reflects the elimination of single-use plastics.
The production of waste, with a variation of 40.7%, result of a more significant destruction of the archive, is the only indicator that does not reflect the general improvement in our environmental performance as an organization.
As part of its commitment to mitigating and adapting to climate change, the BCP Group also calculates and monitors its carbon footprint, participating annually in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). In the 2020 edition, BCP returned to the classification of "A-", Leadership band.
At the national level, Millennium bcp reduced its GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions by 34.9% when compared to the same period in 2019, with a particular focus on direct emissions (-41.3%), going much further in addition to the reduction target approved for 2020 (-5%).
In 2020, part of the 10,309 tCO2eq attributable to the activity of Millennium bcp (excluding the loan portfolio) was compensated with the planting of trees (169.5 tCO2eq).
These results motivate us to pursue policies and to assume daily practices that drive a continued decrease in consumption and waste, the best way to show our commitment to the preservation of the environment and natural resources. in the development of the activity, they continue to represent an important contribution to the effort to optimize operating costs, but fundamentally to mitigate the ecological footprint of Millennium bcp.
