The Millennium Foundation loans painting to the Ancient Art Museum...

The Millennium Foundation has loaned a painting by Vasco Fernandes, a foremost Portuguese painter best known as Grão Vasco, to the Ancient  Art Museum (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga - MNAA).

The painting, “Calvário,” is from 1525 and will be part of the MNAA’s permanent collection, which comprises such significant art pieces as Domingos Sequeira’s “The Adoration of the Magi”, recently acquired through the first ever fundraising campaign carried out by a national museum, or Nuno Gonçalves’ “Panels of St. Vincent”.

The Millennium Foundation has been the MNAA’s main patron,” said Fernando Nogueira, the Foundation’s President. “We have, over the last few years, actively cooperated with this museum, which holds the most comprehensive assembly of the Portuguese culture. The support has been given both to care and preservation works on the building, including the restoration of the roofs of the St. Albert Chapel and the Nativity Scenes Room, and to the funding of temporary exhibitions and catalogue production or the permanent support of the Library and the acquisition of speciality magazines to deepen the knowledge of technicians and investigators. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that, as the holder of such a remarkable work of Portuguese primitive painting, and when the MNAA is displaying its permanent Portuguese painting and sculpture collections after a long break, Millennium bcp loans Vasco Fernandes’ “Calvário” to the museum, hence reinforcing the partnership and improving the most important, and most representative, national museum’s permanent collection”.

The painting will be on the new Level 3 gallery of the MNAA, which has recently reopened with Portuguese painting and sculpture after an eight year break to undergo extensive renovation.
