The newly restored Throne Room at the National Palace of Mafra was been presented to the public late November, an intervention that was possible only because of the support of the Millennium bcp Foundation.

Every time the Royal family got together in Mafra, this was where the “hand-kissing” ceremony took place, on royal anniversary days, name days, Christmas, New Year and other ceremonial occasions. This tradition remained until D. Pedro V abolished it. The room was then closed, being even used as the Palace’s furniture storage, even during the monarchy.

As of 1911, the Royal Palace gradually opened its rooms to the public and this room, as well as several others, was the subject of a restoration work.
