Environmental Management

Millennium bcp takes the management of environmental aspects as a responsibility transversal to the entire Bank:

Supporting Customers in the transition to an economy with a smaller environmental impact

Millennium bcp has made efforts with the aim of finding solutions to support customers in response to: (i) climate change and biodiversity loss resulting from the intensive use of natural resources and the increasing emissions and (ii) the pressure resulting from the introduction of legislation that tends to be increasingly restrictive, so as to prevent and mitigate potential environmental damag.

Socially Responsible Investments (SRI)

Asset management has incorporated in the investment decisions, in addition to the analysis of financial performance, the level of integration of environmental concerns into management and business strategy. Thus socially responsible investments are now available to investors who consider relevant to contemplate environmental risk in their portfolios.

Through its online platform, Millennium bcp provides socially responsible investments that invest in companies or sectors that incorporate environmental concerns.

Minimising the Bank's ecological footprint

Minimizing the ecological footprint of Millennium bcp assumes increasing importance, in terms of reducing both the environmental impact and costs. It is with this purpose that the Bank continuously implements measures to reduce the consumption of energy, water and materials.
Under the project "Millennium bcp environment", a cooperation protocol was established in 2005 between Millennium bcp and the Centre for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE) of the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa and since then various projects have been developed, whose main objectives were: (i) to perform diagnosis; ii) to create self-control mechanisms; iii) to define Millennium bcp's standing in environmental matters and iv) to develop an environmental policy.
In 2010, following the submission of a report on the evolution of resource consumption between 2005 and 2009, a workshop was held, with the participation of about 40 Employees from different areas of the Bank and of the Director with responsibility for these matters, which addressed topics such as:

- Main opportunities and risks for the banking sector in the environmental field;
- The objectives already achieved by Millennium bcp and the paths to follow for what has yet to be done;
- Generate ideas and combine values for Millennium bcp's environmental commitment.

Involving, influencing and being influenced by society

Millennium bcp supports and participates in projects for the benefit and conservation of nature, seeking to compensate for the negative effects arising from its activities. At the same time, it promotes actions to increase self-knowledge and awareness among the various Stakeholders with the aim to change behaviours so as to promote a better balance with the environment.

Millennium bcp supported, since 2006, under scientific patronage, the EcoBlok Project, which consists of an integrated assessment of the environmental performance of products and organizations, developed in CENSE - Center for research in environment and sustainability, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The EcoBlok aims to describe in a clear and comparable manner the environmental performance of products, organizations or projects. The application of the method allows one to assign an environmental label to a product, inform the consumer, simplify the sustainability reporting, support the selection of suppliers, establish environmental management goals, compare different design solutions of a project or product, or support environmental policy measures.

In 2010, based on this model, Millennium bcp's ecological footprint in 2009 was calculated, and the distribution of environmental pressure, arising from the Bank's activity was as follows:

Ambicidades - the response of the cities to climate change

In 2009, the Fundação Millennium bcp supported the production of the report of the Ambicidades project. This project is a centre for studies and ideas to combat climate change and aims to present solutions to mitigate the ecological footprint of cities. In 2009 this study covered 16 Municipalities of the metropolitan area of Porto.

Preserve biodiversity

With the aim of reducing Millennium bcp's ecological footprint and contributing to biodiversity, the Bank promoted, in 2009, an initiative for the reforestation of a portion of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, in partnership with Quercus and the Cascais Natura Agency - Oxygen Project, where 70 volunteers, between Employees and family members gathered to plant more than 800 indigenous species trees (oaks, holm oak and pine) in an area of one hectare, previously ravaged by fires.
Under the initiative for the Commemoration of Autumn 2010, part of the strategic plan for Forestation and under the motto - "one tree, one citizen" - around 50 volunteers of Millennium bcp took a day of their weekend to accept the challenge to plant trees in the Ribeira de Porto Salvo, in Paço de Arcos.

This activity, promoted by the Municipality of Oeiras, took place in the surrounding area of four water lines in the municipality of Oeiras, including Ribeira da Ancha in Porto Salvo, Ribeira de Porto Salvo in Paço de Arcos, Jamor River (section Gandarela) in Carnaxide, Ribeira de Outurela in Carnaxide and aimed to increase the participants awareness of the importance of water lines as structuring lines of the landscape and that intensify Municipal Ecological Structure putting the Citizens closer to the natural environment. It is thus that this activity was an asset and an important contribution to alert the participants and the community involved in the action, to adopt new habits and attitudes for the preservation of the environment.

National and international Benchmark

Millennium bcp, participates in various national and international benchmarks to measure, compare and introduce improvements to its management practices that contribute to the improvement of environmental performance.
