What are Funds

Investment Funds are collective saving instruments formed by a sum of individual investments from several investors who apply their capital in different markets and financial assets (for example: shares, bonds, raw-materials, real estate...).

These funds are managed by professional managers to whom the investors delegate the decision to allocate the assets.

The Investment Funds are divided into identical portions, denominated participation units.

What is a Participation Unit

A Participation Unit is the security representing the investment made by each participant of the Fund. Their sum corresponds to the amount that each participant holds in the fund’s total assets. The participation units are autonomous fractions with identical characteristics that, as a whole, represent at any moment the value of the global assets of an Investment Fund. They are issued at a determined value, on the date the fund is launched, a fact that enables the quantification of their future return.

Why invest

By aggregating savings from hundreds or even thousands of investors, the Investment Funds allow each participant to benefit from advantages that the investors would hardly access individually. The main advantages are:

  • risk diversification - an Investment Fund, due to the amounts traded, may invest in the different markets, sectors and companies, becoming less sensitive to the negative performance of a specific security (or of a sector or even of a market), which may even be off-set by the good performance of another security, sector or market;
  • professional management - Investment Funds are managed by qualified professionals who monitor the financial market on an ongoing basis, assessing trends and identifying investment opportunities;
  • liquidity - since liquidity is the ability to transform the securities (participation units) into cash,  the Funds are instruments with high liquidity since it does not usually take more than three days to make that conversion;
  • easy access - as a participant in an Investment Fund, the individual investor becomes the holder of a portion of a diversified securities portfolio by a small fraction of its purchase cost;
  • scale economies - the managing entity, due to the high amounts managed, has more bargaining power, enabling it to carry out operations that are more favourable for the individual investors (higher income) and reduce the fees paid to the financial intermediaries (less costs).

Besides, the market for Investment Funds is regulated and supervised by entities that ensure compliance with the legal requirements in effect and ensure the provision of quality information to the market (Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários, Associação Portuguesa das Sociedades Gestoras de Patrimónios e de Fundos de Investimento...), this way protecting the investors.

Types of Funds

Get acquainted with the main types of funds here:

  • Money-market funds or short-term funds: these allocate the majority of their assets to high liquidity assets and, traditionally, on a short-term basis, such as term deposits, treasury bills, deposit certificates, etc. Since they invest in low risk assets their yields are closer to those of the interest rate market;
  • Bond Funds: they invest essentially in medium-/long-term treasury bonds or corporate bonds;
  • Stock Funds: they invest mostly in stock listed in the financial markets, are exposed to a higher risk (market volatility) but offer a higher yield potential. In these type of Investment Funds, the investment made should be regarded as long-term.
  • Sector Stock Funds: apply their capital in stock issued by companies whose activities are performed in a pre-defined and specific sector
  • Multi-asset or Mixed Funds: they invest simultaneously in shares, bonds and in other financial assets.
  • Funds of Funds: they invest in other Funds by purchasing participation units, thus providing a high degree of diversification.
